The construction of Brasilia was initiated in 1956 by President Juscelino Kubitschek. Construction was completed in 41 months and the city was inaugurated on 21 April 1960. The city is a planned city, and has the shape of an airplane with a body and wings. The master planner was Lúcio Costa, the architect of most public buildings were Oscar Niemeyer while Roberto Burle Marx was responsible for landscape planning. The master plan is based on le Corbusier's ideas. The city's characteristic is that it is a planned city (Like the example Dodoma in Tanzania and Islamabad in Pakistan)

Brasilia was planned for half a million inhabitants, but has approximately 2.2 million including satellite towns (2004).

UNESCO has included Brasilia on its list of world heritage, this happened in 1987.
