Greenland is the world's largest island. Geographically it belongs to North America, but politically to Europe. The capital is Nuuk (Godthåb). Greenland were in Norway in 1261 In 1814 the real union between Denmark and Norway dissolved as a result of the Treaty of Kiel, and Norway was forced into a new union with Sweden. The old Norwegian tax countries Iceland, Færøyene and Greenland, however, not followed by Norway, were kept by Denmark and incorporated into the Danish national community.

Greenland was until 5 June 1953 a Danish colony.

After a referendum in 1978 Greenland received self-governance with effect from 1 May 1979.

Large parts of the population live on their own hunting and fishing, so the value of their work will not be included in official figures as gross domestic product.

Climate change means that the traditional hunting culture is on the wane Warmer climate makes it difficult for Inuit to travel by dog sled, and make such bear hunting difficult. Warmer climates, however, more open water and more fish, which is favorable for fishing, especially fishing boat. We also see an increasing centralization where people move from rural areas to the major cities, confirming this effect.
