Leeds is a city in West Yorkshire in the north of England in the UK. The city has about 430 000 inhabitants while the metropolitan area (City of Leeds) has about 715 000 inhabitants. Leeds is the core of the unitary authority City of Leeds, which also includes the suburbs Craven, Harrogate, Bradford, Selby, Calderdale, Kirklees, Wakefield and Barnsley. The River Aire runs through the city.
The city's official slogan is The UK's Favourite City.

The city center is characterized by modern buildings and extensive new construction. The city is known for its many shopping centers, most just east of the train station. The malls were built in the late 1800s and has since become a major new shopping complex.

Leeds has either metro or tram, which is unusual for a city of this size. There are however plans to reintroduce trams running.

The city is known for its extensive nightlife with a variety of night clubs, much because of all the students here. Night clubs often have a short life span and decadent name. "Hanna and Dea" called one of the many clubs that are popular with young people.

The town is Leeds Grand Theatre which is a major opera scene. The Henry Moore Institute are both central library and a gallery. Besides the main library, there are about 50 local libraries in the various districts and suburbs.

Like other British cities of the same size Leeds has been limited to artists who have eluded internationally. Among those who are successful are Chumbawamba, Melanie Brown (Spice Girls) and The Sisters of Mercy. In August each year held Leeds Festival in Bramham Park east of town.

The major sports in Leeds are the same as in the UK as a whole, football, rugby and cricket. Football team Leeds United play at Elland Road and occasionally had many great times. In winter it is common to set up an ice rink at the square by the town hall.
