Cairns is the 14. most populous city in Australia. The city is located in the northeast of the State of Queensland and is popular due to its tropical climate, and its location. Cairns is located on the East coast of Cape York Peninsula on a coastal strip between the Coral Sea and the Great Dividing Range. The northern part of the city is located on Trinity Bay and the town centre is located on Trinity Inlet. The world's largest coral reef, The Great Barrier Reef, can be reached in under an hour by boat from the town. About 130 km north of Cairns is located two national parks, the Daintree National Park and Cape Tribulatio, where tourists can experience the rain forest.

Tourism plays a major role in the Cairns economy and is the fourth most popular destination for international tourists in Australia after Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Cairns has a number of protected sites such as: Dr EA Koch Memorial, the Barrier Reef Hotel, Cairns Court House complex, St Joseph's convent, St Monica's War Memorial Cathedral, Kuranda Scenic Railway, Flecker botanical gardens, volunteer corps of World War II by Cairns control room, Bolands Centre, Adelaide Steamship Co Ltd, McLeod Street Pioneer Cemetery, Herries Private Hospital, St Monica's old cathedral, Cairns Masonic Temple and Cairns War Memorial.
