The city is located at the northern end of the Australian Capital Territory, south-west of Sydney, and north-east of Melbourne. Canberra was selected as Australia's capital in 1908 as a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne, the two largest cities. This is unusual among Australian cities, as it is a planned city. After an international competition to design the city, was designed by the Chicago architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin selected and construction began in 1913. The city's design had a significant influence from Haveby movement and incorporates notable areas of natural vegetation, which has given Canberra the title "bush capital". Although the growth and development of Canberra were hindered by the World Wars and the Great Depression, the city has emerged as a thriving city after World War II.
