Northern Territory was part of the colony of New South Wales from 1825 to 1863, and part of South Australia from 1863 to 1911. 1 January 1911, ten years after Federation of Australia, the Northern Territory separated from South Australia and transferred to federal control. In 1978 the territory of their own self-government, with a legislature controlled by a first minister.
