Republic of Armenia or Hayq is a state in the South Caucasus, between the Black Sea and Caspian Sea. The country has no coastline and is bordered by Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east, Iran to the south and Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan exclave to the south-west. Armenia is a member of the Council of Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. Armenian language constitutes a separate branch within the Indo-European language, and seems to have originated in Asia Minor.

Almost all Armenia is in the Caucasus Mountains. In the country there are many extinct volcanoes. It happens often earthquake there. The highest peak is Mount Aragats located in the northwest and is 4090 meters high. Further east is Lake Sevan at an altitude of nearly 2,000 meters above sea level. Aras River flows through the plains of south-easterly direction, forming the border with Turkey. In the south is Iran.

The country has a dry climate with short cold winters and long hot summers in the plains. In the mountains it is cooler and winters there can also be bitterly cold. The vegetation in the south consists mainly of grass, where both live jackals, wild cats and leopards. In the north consists of wildlife ranging from squirrels to bears.
