Republic of Moldova is a country in Eastern Europe without a coastline, located between Romania to the west and Ukraine to the east. The border with Romania follows the rivers Prut and the Danube. Moldova was formerly a republic of the Soviet Union under the name of Moldavian SSR.
The land includes most of the historic landscape Bessarabia, except marshes furthest south and the northernmost parts. In addition, hear a narrow strip of land on the east side of the river Dnjestr to Moldova. This area is called Transnistria and was incorporated in the Moldavian SSR in 1940. Transnistria is not under Moldavian control, and is practically independent even though no one has recognized it as a separate state. |
