The Principality of Andorra is a small country located between France and Spain in the eastern part of the Pyrenees mountain range. The former are so poor and isolated country is experiencing a resurgence the past due to tourism and its status as a tax haven.

According to tradition, got its freedom Andorra by Charlemagne in exchange for their efforts in the war against the Moors. Sovereignty over the area fell to the Count of Urgell and later Bishop of the Diocese of Urgell. During the 1000's triggered this a disagreement between France (the northern neighbor) and bishop.
In 1278 the conflict was resolved by shared domination of Andorra between the French count of Foix (this was later transferred to the French head of state) and the Bishop of Urgell.

Due Andorra isolated location, the country remained outside the important events in European history. Andorra had connections with few countries outside of Spain and France. In recent years, due to major advances in transport and communication, Andorra has increasingly become a part of European society. The political system was modernized in 1993.
